I think what's missing from the little blurb is some sort of an 'event'. You're talking about centuries of time. Surely something must have happened...? Even if it's a hundred little things that gradually weighed on him, I have a hard time believing that someone turned from one opinion to another without a slight of some kind, even an unintentional one.
