Villain Month: Natural Predators

I’m obviously a sick, sick person, because I’m getting a kick out of this webpage. It’s the Chamber of Horrors of Travel Medicine, and while not specifically about villains, I think it ties in well. I stumbled onto it because of the horrific image of a half-eaten human carcass ravaged by a mountain lion – which I’ve been researching for a project. The rest of the images on the page were equally grotesque and I ended up reading through. It addresses a lot of conventions we see in our favorite film and literature, such as quicksand, death by piranha, disease, and cannibalism.

As it turns out, some of these non-human villainous threats aren’t all that implausible.

Warning: Some of the subject matter is quite graphic and not for the faint of heart.

Myths and facts from The Chamber of Horrors of Travel Medicine

Whoops?

I forgot to mention that I’m in New Mexico for two weeks visiting my sister.

I figured, oh feh, I’ll have Internet, I can continue conceptizing and post from there.

Obviously Internet access has not been as bountiful as I anticipated.

But I’ll be back to posting as soon and blog-hopping as I’m home.

There’s no one like you, and there’s no one like me, so there’s nothing like us….

SO much art I want to get up. But for now I’ll just post the results of the day.

To get my niece out of my hair I told her to write a story. Development on that has been good, but I made the mistake of doing some character sketches for her and now she expects me to illustrate the whole thing. Aye dios mio~.

We went to downtown Annapolis to draw………….. yes, yes, I know it’s not a sailboat! So shoot me.

Also got started on this week’s character challenge. Behold the incompleteness! Heh now that I look at it I ponder going the cyberpunk route….

Villain Month Kick-off

A blog acquaintance named Eliza announced an activity she’d be doing an activity called Villain Month and I thought, what the hey, maybe I’ll join in. Along with drawing and animating over the summer, I’ve been wanting to work on my writing as well. This is a little different from my usual posts – there won’t be as much art for one thing – so if you’ve got the attention span to read my crazed ideas I’d appreciate any crits, questions, and suggestions you can throw my way!

Character Sunday #3: An armed art student enters an illegal fighting tournament

Every week a phrase will be posted, and everyone will have a week to do a design based on that idea. The goal is to push your concepts as far as they will go – be creative, be inventive, be absolutely outrageous if you have to be as long as it’s unique. The prompt will give you a descriptive adjective, a noun, and a situation for your subject – so you’re free to include prop and environment designs and anything else you want, but we’ll probably all be pretty busy this summer, so just a character design is fine.

Be sure to post the results up in your blog and leave a link here so we can see!

This week’s prompt is:

An armed art student enters an illegal fighting tournament.

Next prompt will be posted June 8.

A note on this one… a coupla friends and I were discussing the idea of “art school meets Battle Royale.” We obviously read too much manga. :p Essentially, imagine an art student if the school curriculum culminated in a fight to the death.

Character #2: Reluctant Dinosaur goes on a killing spree ahhhhh~!

Poor things never saw it coming… yeah the image is way too big, so I made a thumbnail for it. Clicky clicky!

Sadly I did draw the first character challenge, but I utterly FAIL at painting so I haven’t finished it. Meh I should just post it anyway.Okay 3rd character coming up – and to those participating, if you have any ideas for chara prompts, please feel free to e-mail them to me at nilaffle @ gmail . com. Betsy was gracious enough to contribute the last one, but unless you wanna deal with my crappy prompts for the summer I suggest you get to brainstorming!

Also got a lot of art to post, coming soon….
